Research Study: Redesigning children’s orthotic devices

An ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is an externally applied brace that encompasses and supports the foot, ankle, and lower leg.

It has been reported that child AFO users may have experiences that discourage them from wearing their AFOs. Our study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of AFOs from the perspective of children and to ultimately understand what factors influence AFO adherence and non-adherence. By incorporating children’s voices and ideas (through fun activities) we hope to ultimately improve aspects of the AFO experience, enhancing quality of life and promote independence. We invite you to take part in this study because you have insights that will help design better AFOs.

We are inviting you to take part in a focus group, which involves being in a group of up to 4 people to talk about your AFO experiences. This will involve some creative exercises and activities (it is not a test!).

Criteria for eligible participants

  • AFO users (Age 4-18 years) or previous AFO child user (age ≥19)
  • Parent/guardian of AFO user (AFO user 4-18 years).
  • Able to communicate in English
  • Able to reflect and communicate their own experience
