Physical activity and fitness

Physical activity is a long term health investment.
For an adult with cerebral palsy (CP), aiming to stay as physically fit as possible can help you to manage changes in your body as a result of CP and the natural ageing processes. It is important to work on managing and maintaining your physical fitness, mobility and balance so you can continue doing things that are important to you. So, let’s get out and moving!

Being active is essential for good mental and physical health and wellbeing. It reduces the risk of many diseases and helps maintain a healthy weight. It can also improve your balance and coordination, reduce tiredness and fatigue and can help to increase your social participation.

What activities do you enjoy that suit your body? There are different types of exercises that you can do depending on your interests, needs and goals. Start small and gradually increase the duration (how long), frequency (how often) and intensity (how hard) of your exercise over time. Before starting an exercise program, talk to your doctor, an exercise physiologist or physiotherapist. They can help you develop a suitable program that is fun, safe and sustainable for you.
