They are trying new experiences, learning to do many things for themselves and exploring different ways to become more independent.
For teenagers with cerebral palsy (CP) the desire to be independent is no different to their typically developing peers. But many teenagers with CP will need some extra support with daily self-care activities like toileting, bathing, moving between positions, managing personal hygiene, dressing, mealtimes and positioning for sleeping. The ability to carry out self-care activities is influenced by factors such as gross and fine motor function, swallowing function, vision and cognition.
A goal for teens is often to achieve a balance between self-independence and receiving the right amount of help from others.
