In Their Own Words: Self-Determination as Seen by Young People with Intellectual Disability as They Transition into Adulthood

About the study

This research project is about young people with intellectual disability and their experiences of growing up, making choices and decisions, and becoming an adult.

I want to learn about how you make decisions that matter to you, what makes it easier or harder for you to have control in your life, and what growing up means to you.

Who can participate?

Young people with intellectual disability, 12 to 28 years old, who live in Australia.

You might communicate by talking, using a device (like an iPad), or in other ways.

What is involved?

If you choose to take part, you can decide between

  • just talk (about 1 hour)
  • talk and look at photos you have taken (about 90 minutes total)

The session can be face to face, online on MS Teams or Zoom, or on the phone.

You can bring a support person if you want. If you are 12-17 years old you need to bring a support person, but they do not have to come into the interview room with you.
