New Video – Stem Cell Therapy and how it works

Cerebral Palsy Alliance's specialist researcher, Megan Finch-Edmondson, is featured in a new video produced with the support of a project grant from the Research Foundation of Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The video explains the basics of stem cell therapy and outlines some of the considerations for those exploring this as a treatment option for children with neurological conditions.

Stem cell therapy is a game-changing new treatment that has great potential in the medical world. By using the body’s own cells, or those of a donor, stem cell therapy may be able to help alleviate symptoms or even improve some medical conditions.

Stem cells are special cells that can turn into different types of cells in the body. This means stem cells can help to repair damaged tissues. Stem cell therapy using blood-forming stem cells is currently able to be used to treat blood disorders and some neurological conditions. One day, stem cells may be available to treat conditions like cerebral palsy or spinal cord injuries.

The video, hosted by the Kids Advanced Therapeutics (KAT) program within the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, explains how stem cell therapy works, how doctors collect and prepare stem cells, and the amazing ways they can be used to help treat people. Whilst still in research, stem cell therapy could change the way we treat cerebral palsy and, along with supportive therapies, may help improve the lives of people living with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance is at the forefront of stem cell research for the treatment and possible prevention of cerebral palsy, collaborating with national and international research teams with the goal of making safe and effective stem cell treatments available in the future. By studying how stem cells work, researchers are helping move towards creating safe and effective treatments.

Stem cell therapy offers new hope for people living with cerebral palsy and their families and makes the future of cerebral palsy research brighter than ever.
