Improve your cooking skils and become more independent

The Chit-Chat Cooking group is a therapy and skills based program developed by an interdisciplinary team to build a young person’s ability to develop basic cooking skills at the same time as developing and extending their communication skills through functional use of their alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems. 

 

Who is this program for?

  • Teenagers aged 13-17 years wanting to improve their:
    • Communication skills – using AAC systems, verbal communication
    • Social skills
    • Fine motor skills
  • Ideal for teenagers who are motivated to become more independent and wishing to increase their participation in meal time preparation and cooking skills. 

 

What does this program involve?

  • Meal preparation
  • Cooking and cleaning

 

What are the outcomes?

  • Goal based and individual to clients function and need.
  • Cooking skills include cutting, stirring with a focus on uni-manual and bimanual skills and support with task modification or environment modification as required.
  • Social skills include: turn taking, asking appropriate questions, and waiting, following instructions and commenting / sharing opinions.
