Improve your daily living skills and become more independent
The Chit-Chat Group is a therapy and skills based program developed by an interdisciplinary team to build a young person’s ability to develop independence skills at the same time as developing and extending their communication skills, through functional use of their alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems.
Teenagers will work as a team to design and create their own inventions, carry out science experiments and cook meals. They will practice conversational and other social skills with their peers guided by the Speech Pathologist.
Who is this program for?
- Teenagers aged 12-17 years wanting to improve their:
- Communication skills – using AAC systems, verbal communication
- Social skills
- Fine motor skills
- Ideal for teenagers wishing to increase their participation in tasks that will help them with daily living
What does this program involve?
- Activities such as making slime, playdough, volcanoes, and science experiments.
- Cooking will be included at such a time COVID-19 restrictions ease.
What are the outcomes?
- Build independence, strengthening bimanual and fine motor skills, sequencing, measuring, safety awareness, following written recipe/instructions.
- Social skills: turn taking, asking appropriate questions, and waiting, following instructions and commenting / sharing opinions.
