Written by Sabine Blakeman, Disability Support Practitioner, Sports Team
Sabine works as a Disability Support Practitioner and her rugby career brought her into the fold of the sports team. As an athlete and someone who has always loved and been involved in sport, she is excited to share the endless positive benefits it has physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively.

Winter did not hold us back this year, the CPA Winter Sports School Holiday Program brought joy, laughter, and boundless adventure to all participants. Our action-packed Winter School Holiday program provides an opportunity for every athlete to participate in these activities and sports at their own levels while they extend their limits, and see what they are truly capable of in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Week 1 saw a variation of sports and activities; Mini Golf, to a day full of Mountain Bike Riding for beginners, and everything in between. A week filled with exhilarating activities that celebrated friendship, fun, and fitness all while the sun was shining.

Day 1 – Monday 08/07 – Mini Golf & Sports

A day full of Mini Golf fun at the famous Pittwater Golf Centre, we made our way through the Pirate Ship course 18 Holes, and then on to complete 36 Holes of the Pirate Cove course – a fan favourite. The return to the Pirate Cove for an additional 18 Holes was based upon participants still trying to chase the elusive hole-in-one!! Everyone navigated tricky obstacles with determination, making every hole-in-one even sweeter!

Day 2 – Tuesday 09/07 – Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre & Bike Riding at Blaxlands Park

The Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre became our playground for the morning, where all our athletes enjoyed making their own waves with the freedom of swimming, splashing and revelling in the water. We then headed to Blaxland Riverside Park to finish the afternoon off with bike riding and park sports, everyone had a chance to race or meander their way around the bike paths warming up in the wintery afternoon sun.

Day 3 – Wednesday 10/07 – Bounce Inc Cromer & Multi Sports

Laughter and smiles are always a constant when visiting Bounce Inc Trampoline Centre. Everyone had a go at defying gravity, bouncing, jumping and leaping their way around the centre. Some braved the high ropes cable course or rock climbing with resilience. The opportunities here are endless with a trampoline or activity for any ability. The remainder of the afternoon was spent on the multi-sport outdoor court at Allambie with touch footy, basketball, and dodgeball before we moved inside to run amuck – playing cops and robbers, hide and seek, and sardines – no hiding place was left unturned.

Day 4 – Thursday 11/07 – 10-Pin Bowling & Movie (Despicable Me 4)

The bowling & chill day was a treat for those wanting a more relaxed sport or activity. We headed to Zone Bowling in Dee Why where our young athletes’ cheers echoed through the halls as everyone aimed for strikes and celebrated each and every frame and knocked down pin victoriously! We then headed straight to United Cinemas Warriewood for an afternoon showing of Despicable Me 4, for the “chill” part of the day. Laughter and giggling was again a constant as we watched on for another of Gru’s adventures.

Day 5 – Friday 12/07 – Northern Beaches MTB Riding for beginners

We couldn’t have asked for a more spectacular sunny morning to spend pedalling our way around Narrabeen Lake , an 8.5km loop track that has a taste of all MTB surfaces; pavement, dirt paths (still soggy from recent rains), sand, grass, bridges, and elevated metal grate pathways to name a few. The perfect introduction to MTB Riding for young beginner riders. We returned to CPA Allambie for lunch, and a game of soccer before heading off on our bikes to Allambie Oval to explore the fire trails that lead to Manly Dam.
