Will’s Story: Creativity, Confidence and Community at CPA Lifestyles

For the past 11 years, Will has been bringing his joyful, energetic spirit to CPA’s Lifestyles program – a centre-based day program designed to help young adults with disability build skills, independence and connection. And from the very beginning, it was clear he’d found his place.

“Will is joyful. He is inspirational,” says his mum, Penny. “He needs to be around people—and then he comes alive.”

A space to thrive, not just attend

When Penny first visited the CPA Lifestyles centre at St Ives, what stood out wasn’t just the accessible facilities or the range of activities. It was the sense of possibility.

“I chose this particular Lifestyles because I loved the fact it was like a big community centre,” she says. “Will doesn’t just come here to be babysat for the day. He comes here to be creative, learn new things, be with people, go out into the community.”

The program gives Will a place where his passions are nurtured. His days are filled with painting, performing, music therapy and being surrounded by others who bring out the best in him.

Discovering his happy place

Art quickly became a favourite for Will. “We just discovered that it was a time when Will could be really calm and peaceful and creative,” Penny shares. “He just loved doing it. It’s his happy place.”

That creativity has flourished at Lifestyles, where he’s been encouraged not just to enjoy art and music, but to aim high.

A standing ovation moment

One of Will’s greatest achievements came when the Lifestyles team helped him and his peers prepare for the opportunity of a lifetime—performing at the Sydney Opera House.

“It was several months of a lot of practice for every single person involved,” Penny recalls. “Opening night came and we all went there. As a mum, sitting there with my whole family, we were so proud.”

Seeing Will take the stage was a powerful moment.

“I thought, ‘Wow—this is incredible. The things that he’s done here—I never dreamed of.’”

More than just a program

Beyond the art and performance, Lifestyles has offered Will something even more important: a sense of identity and purpose.

“The program has given Will an opportunity to learn, to create, and to know that there is so much more that he can be and do,” says Penny.

She credits the passionate team for creating that environment. “Every single support worker here is incredible. There’s an energy here that is beautiful.”

Advice for other families

For families considering a centre-based day program, Penny offers heartfelt advice: “If there are parents out there wondering where their child should go after school—this has been an incredible experience. It continues to be.”

Will’s journey with Lifestyles began over a decade ago, but the impact is stronger than ever.

“He is so happy here. I knew it was the best place 11 years ago—but I really know it is now.”
