Remarkable introduces Scaler Program to its portfolio

Scaler to provide additional support and funding for new disability tech start-ups

The Remarkable Scaler program, made possible by Cerebral Palsy Alliance, recently launched its fourth program to assist disability tech startups. Scaler follows the groundbreaking success of Remarkable’s Design-athon, Launcher and Accelerator programs.

Remarkable’s four global programs support startups with the knowledge and skills to become a commercially sustainable business for each stage of the startup journey:

  1. Design-athon is focused on ideation – building a first prototype for testing; 2.
  2. Launcher provides support to validate an early-stage idea; and 3.
  3. Accelerator provides pre seed funding, coaching, user feedback, and support for commercialising your startup.

Following the successes of the 80+ new businesses whose journey has benefited from one or more of these programs, the question soon arose ‘what’s next?’.

It became apparent there was a need to help startups post-accelerator to get through the next phase of development – going from startup to scale up. That’s where the Scaler program comes in!

Remarkable’s Head of Investment, Zara Fulton explains “Scaler helps disability tech startups who have achieved product-market fit and are in need of capital and connections to pursue their solid growth and expansion plan to become a successful business and ultimately achieve the impact that benefits people with disability”.

The Remarkable Scaler program participates in Seed to Series A stage funding and provides individualised strategic support for disability tech ventures with an established product in the market and who are seeking early growth capital to scale up.

The Scaler program helps founders secure the coaching, mentoring, industry connections to work out how to scale, mitigate risk and execute with excellence.

The bespoke program helps businesses identify key strategic developments and implement strategies to improve ongoing investment readiness. Regular check-ins, coaching and access to expert mentoring tailored to suit a founder’s specific needs takes place over a 12 – 24 month period.

In addition, participants have access to Remarkable’s extensive network that extends across the Australian disability, aged and health markets, plus global networks that can support the growth of the business.

The Scaler program is accepting applications on a rolling basis so if you are an ambitious disability tech venture founder and are ready to flourish then jump on in!

Remarkable’s remarkable history

With humble beginnings dating back to 2012, Pete Horsley, volunteer manager at Cerebral Palsy Alliance, had an idea to run a global program to support early-stage technology ideas to get to market and to better serve the needs of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

A couple of years later, the first of four current support programs was born – Design-athon. Originally called ‘Enabled by Design-athon’, this hackathon styled competition invited designers, makers, engineers and creatives to participate in an inclusive design journey to develop early-stage prototypes co-designed with people with disability to solve for identified problems.  The now annual event, Design-athon, was originally run in partnership with Enabled by Design (UK), the University of Technology Sydney and FutureGov (UK) with support from NSW Department of Family and Community Services.

Then the Telstra Foundation came on board as a CPA partner, Remarkable was born in early 2016 with the addition of the Accelerator Program. In 2022, the third program, Launcher, was also added. It supports early-stage projects and startups at the beginning of their journey to map out a path towards validating their idea. Now in 2023, we are adding Scaler. These programs have successfully helped to launch more than 80 companies into the marketplace who have made a tremendous impact on the disability, aged and health sectors.

The Scaler program is a demonstrated step in Remarkable’s mission: harnessing the power of technology and innovation to shape a world of equal opportunity, access and possibility for people with disability.
