Spotlight on cerebral palsy: CPA researchers lead Mercy Perinatal Twilight Series webinar

On Wednesday 27 August 2025, Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) researchers took centre stage in a global conversation on cerebral palsy, presenting at Mercy Perinatal’s highly regarded Twilight Series webinar. This two-hour event drew an extraordinary 1,800 attendees, mainly obstetricians and maternal health professionals, from across Australia and around the world.

Chaired by Mercy Perinatal’s Professor Sue Walker AO, the session featured Professor Nadia Badawi AM, Professor Rod Hunt and Yana Wilson (CPA), alongside long-standing collaborators Professor Michael Fahey and Professor Kirsten Palmer. Together, they presented on the latest thinking and evidence on the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cerebral palsy (CP).

The webinar delivered a comprehensive overview of:

  • What is CP? Understanding diagnosis and early identification
  • Global trends and causes: Insights from the Australian CP Register and international research
  • The role of genetics: Including an update on the CP Genomics Consortium
  • Stem cell research: Current evidence, particularly regarding umbilical cord blood therapies
  • Public health and prevention: Including CMV, magnesium sulphate and therapeutic hypothermia (cooling).
  • Fundraising and community action: A strong call to action to support STEPtember.

For health professionals, this event was a reminder of the importance of good pregnancy care, ongoing research, and public health advocacy in improving outcomes for babies at risk of CP.
