Cerebral Palsy Alliance Joins Forces with Northcott and Afford to Form ‘Disability Inclusion Dream Team’ at Sydney Mardi Gras

This year's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was a celebration like no other, as Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) joined forces with Northcott and Afford to form the 'Disability Inclusion Dream Team.' Together, we created a stunning and inclusive presence in the parade, showcasing the joy, diversity, and strength of the LGBTQIA+ disability community.

People with CP, CPA staff and volunteers, along with CPA’s fabulous Ambassador—acclaimed writer and disability rights advocate Elly Desmarchelier—showered themselves in glitter, donned angel wings, and bedazzled their wheelchairs to bring the float theme, ‘Free to Fly,’ to life. The atmosphere was electric, as people with disability took centre stage in one of the world’s most iconic celebrations of love, pride, and inclusion.

Reflecting on the event, Elly Desmarchelier shared her excitement and gratitude: “CPA didn’t just give me an opportunity—they transformed what true queer inclusion looks like! Every person on that CP team showed the world that disabled queers aren’t just invited to the party—we are the party!”

Teigan Butchers, CPActive Lead and member of CPA Pride, described the highlight of the parade as the fantastic showcase of intersectionality of the disabled community. “People with disability belong in LGBTQIA+ spaces and tonight we had that representation in our float and were able to celebrate it in such an iconic way,” Teigan said. “It was also amazing to see the combined efforts of all three organisations—CPA, Northcott, and Afford—coming together and working hard behind the scenes for months, as well as on the day, to make it the best Mardi Gras yet.”

Being part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was a powerful way for CPA to raise awareness of the rights of people with disability in society and model inclusion. Our presence in the parade sent a message loud and clear: the LGBTQIA+ disability community is not just a part of the celebration—it is at the very heart of it.

Renae Warne, CPA Lifestyles Coordinator described the evening as a massive highlight not just for the clients but also for the staff involved. “It was an absolute privilege to be in the parade with our clients, my friends and colleagues. It was such a highlight, one will never forget.”

CPA is proud to have been part of this year’s Mardi Gras and congratulates everyone involved for making this a truly unforgettable and historic celebration of pride, representation, and unity!
