Join our Chatterbox group for young children who are learning to communicate but have not yet learned to speak.  

Parents know that communication starts long before children learn to speak. Your child may use vocalisations, pointing or facial expressions to get their message across. Our Chatterbox group helps you recognise your child’s unique ways of communicating and different ways you can respond to encourage their communication and verbalisation. 

Chatterbox Early Communication Group is a group-based early communication intervention for children and their parents. The group runs weekly during school-term dates or as an intensive school-holiday program and is suitable for children who are at risk of language delay or have a diagnosed language delay. The program includes language stimulation techniques and parent training to facilitate and improve early communication skills. 

Note: The weekly program runs in line with NSW school term dates.

What does it involve?

Musical activities  
Storytime  
Use of multi-model communication and aided language stimulation to expand the child’s communication 
Guided and unguided communication and play activities to promote early communication skills 
Weekly handouts with activity ideas to practice at home

What are the outcomes?

The ability to recognise and respond to your child's communication attempts and build on their current strength 
To effectively follow your child's lead in play by being attentive to what your child is focused on (joint attention) 
Take turns in communication and play 
Expanding your child's communication through the use of multi-model communication and aided language stimulation

Who is the program for?

Young children aged 12 months – 3 years old
Children at risk of or diagnosed with a language delay
Children who use vocalisations, pointing or facial expressions to communicate a message
Not yet able to verbalise when communicating
Parent or primary carer available to attend duration of program
