Has your NDIS funding changed? What to do next

Changes to NDIS funding can leave you feeling worried or unsure about what to do next. Here is a simple guide to what is changing, when it may affect you and where to get help.

What is changing?

From 1 October 2026, the NDIS began reducing funding for two support categories:

  • Social, economic and community participation: reduced by 50%
  • Improved daily living skills: reduced by 10%

These reductions only apply to these two categories, not to your entire NDIS plan. The impact will be different for every participant.

When will the changes affect me?

Your funding does not automatically change from 1 October. The reductions apply when:

  • A new plan is created or reassessed from 1 October 2026
  • An existing plan is renewed from 1 February 2027

The changes will be introduced gradually until 30 September 2027. You can continue using your current plan and supports until your new, reassessed or renewed plan begins.

Which supports are not affected?

Other parts of your NDIS plan will not be reduced because of this change. This includes supports such as:

  • Help with everyday activities at home
  • Home and vehicle modifications
  • Mobility equipment and transport
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation
  • Some consumable products

Some supports within the affected categories are also protected, including employment supports, disability-related health supports, high-intensity supports, intensive and complex behaviour supports, customised technology and hearing services.

How can I understand the impact on my plan?

Your new plan should show your total funding and the amount available after the reduction. Compare your previous and new plans, and consider asking:

  • Which support budgets have changed?
  • Which of my services use the affected funding?
  • Can I continue receiving my current supports?
  • Which supports are most important to my safety, wellbeing and goals?
  • How can I use my available funding to work towards my goals?

Your support coordinator, plan manager or provider may be able to help you understand your new budget.

Can I request a review?

The funding reduction itself is not a reviewable decision. However, you may be able to request a plan variation or reassessment if there has been a significant and ongoing change to your:

  • Support needs or ability to complete everyday activities
  • Living arrangements
  • Education or employment
  • Support from family, friends or carers

You will need to complete the NDIA’s plan reassessment request form and provide evidence showing what has changed. Eligible participants with high support needs may also be able to request a plan variation if the reduction affects their essential 24-hour disability supports.

What should I do next?

If your funding has changed:

1. Compare your new plan with your previous plan.

2. Identify which budgets and services are affected.

3. Consider which supports are most important to you.

4. Speak with your support coordinator, plan manager and providers.

5. Contact the NDIA if your needs have significantly changed or essential supports may be affected.
