Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA)

Understanding your needs so you can access the right supports
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a detailed assessment completed by an Occupational Therapist to understand how your disability impacts your everyday life.

Our experienced occupational therapists look at your strengths, challenges, and goals across daily activities like self-care, communication, mobility, and community participation. They identify where you may need support, and what services can help you live more independently.

Your FCA report provides the evidence the NDIS needs to understand your situation and fund the right supports.

A strong report makes all the difference

Your assessment and report can be used to:

  • Support a new NDIS application
  • Prepare for a plan review or reassessment
  • Provide evidence for a change in circumstances
  • Support applications for housing, assistive technology, or increased supports

Our team knows how to match recommendations to NDIS criteria. We help you clearly show which supports are reasonable and necessary.

Frequently asked questions

A Functional Capacity Assessment is a detailed assessment completed by an Occupational Therapist to understand how your disability affects your ability to complete everyday tasks and participate in daily life.

A Functional Capacity Assessment is used to provide evidence for NDIS decisions. It helps determine what supports you need, how much support is required, and why those supports are necessary.

A functional capacity assessment is typically completed by a qualified Occupational Therapist. Not all OTs specialise in this area. So, it’s important to choose someone with the right expertise, including strong report writing skills.

The cost of a Functional Capacity Assessment can vary based on your needs and the time required.

If you are an NDIS participant, your NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment is usually funded under your plan, so there are typically no out-of-pocket costs.

Assessments can take several hours across one or more sessions, depending on your needs. Time is also required for report writing to ensure your recommendations are clear and evidence based.

It can help to share:

  • Previous reports or assessments
  • Your NDIS plan and goals
  • Information about your daily routines and supports
  • This helps your Occupational Therapist build a more complete picture of your needs.

After your Occupational Therapist led Functional Capacity Assessment, you’ll receive a detailed report that can be shared with the NDIS, your support coordinator, or other providers to guide your supports and planning.
