With global recognition, HABIT-ILE is a breakthrough therapy for children who experience challenges with hand and gross motor function.
Developed in Belgium in 2011, HABIT-ILE leverages the latest science in neuroplasticity and is clinically proven to provide lasting and significant functional improvement.
HABIT-ILE provides 63 hours of one-on-one therapy in a fun group environment across 9 days (7 hours a day) plus up to 7 hours pre and post assessment. A total of 73 hours of individualised therapy.
HABIT-ILE uses a motor-learning-based approach to care, leisure and productivity goals through highly structured, daily, practice. During the intervention, activities and tasks are progressively graded toward more complex bimanual coordination for the arms and hands, and increasing demands of the legs and balance systems.
What does it involve?
- Depending on the child's goals, activities can include:
- Craft, sports, bike riding, yoga, cooking, technology
- Everyday skill development (e.g buttoning a shirt)
- Snacks, all consumables used in goal practice such as cooking ingredients and a graduation ceremony held on day 9 for the whole family will also be included
Note: Children must bring a lunchbox with their own morning tea and lunch.
What are the outcomes?
- Accelerated development of fine and gross motor skills
- Improved performance of and independence with mobility, self-care, leisure and productivity goals
- Increased self-confidence and improved ability to participate in daily activities at home, at school and in the community
Who is the program for?
- 6-15 years
- Children who have mild to moderate cerebral palsy or similar condition (GMFCS I-IV) who can follow instructions and participate in a group environment
- With a goal to strengthen, fine tune or learn new motor skills so they can play and participate more confidently in everyday activities. Goals can include riding a bike, catching a ball, tying shoe laces, using a knife and fork, putting on shoes and ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), dressing more independently, walking up and down stairs, improved transfers, typing and writing with better speed and efficiency and more.
